started the preheat at around 3pm. finished at around 11pm. not bad. we'll see what the pieces look like tomorrow night for unload.

firing went smooth, no burners going out. i fired several chawan on the side w/ shells. will see what happens. either it will be stunning or rubbish. relativity !

i wish i could close the door. seems i need a little more stuff for the next soda firing . anyone out there for suggestion on 'juice'. soda mix ? 80 soda ash, 10 whiting ? 10 bicarb ? hehe.. i can mix whatevers...

tried a little more water at around 2000 degrees F.
also stuffed the kiln w/ mesquite . opening on friday after cooling and will post photographs of the kama (kiln).

loading for another firing. thinking about adding bicarbonate to the soda ash/water mix. i have some pieces w/ applied mesquite ash and a super big plate (near 36-inch diameter). should be interesting. i hope the burners don't go out. i'll photograph the before and after once i have some time. aloha !

interesting results. joan, a ceramics colleague used gold shino on her coleman porcelain with some fabulous results . i should ask her if i can photograph her piece
right burner went out during preheat overnight. safety kicked in.
overall the kiln was super reduced. i think w/one burner on low, it serendipitously created a reduction atmosphere.

fired march 14, 2009 saturday. no preheat. the right burner went out 2 times delaying the firing to 14 hours to reach cone 10.
looking forward to firing on monday with a startup and preheat on sunday
i used a mix of soda ash, water and a little whiting. i had a little difficulty suspending the whiting. most of the whiting was left on the bottom.
after reaching cone 10, i stuffed the larger port with as much mequite coal for a mild cooling reduction.
