Just to chime in, I welded my grate out of rebar and stock metal. I remove them from the kiln at the end of each firing (fast fire design, so this is possible... but very hot) this will extend the life of the grate immensly. I've had 7 firings int...

Unless you get some super duper stainless I think you're just going to have to replace the grates every few firings. We used to use truck axles ( the part inside the rear end) which are about as tough as it gets and we still had to repl...

The general conclusion around these parts seems to be that stainless steel bars are not worth the expense. Most folks around here tend to use regular black iron pipe ( aka 'black pipe' ) available from a metal shop or plumbing/gas line ...

thanks. so rebar will work for more than a firing? what kind of stainless, are there bars? thanks for the input, that is wicked helpful.
Re-bar, even 1" burns out after a handful of firings. Plan on replacing often or try stainless if you can afford it.

Mark Peters said… - Yeah, plywood isn't real refractory. I'm assuming you were using it to get the firebox bricks to line up with the warechamber which is up on blocks. The best thing to use is Durock or Wonderboard. They're about a half inch thick. There's another one that's about an eighth forget the name. They are a concrete board that is used in tile work.
15 hours is OK. If you want to go faster make sure your wood is as dry as possible. Makes a big dif.
