Hey Paul, popping in to see how your latest firings are going. Also, I wrote a big blost post awhile ago that as I re-read your questions, realized it may be of interest to you: http://blog.mudstuffing.com/?p=572

Hi Paul I agree with Keith, it takes a while to get the results you're looking for. Don't give up! Are you using the same clay body? You mentioned porcelain, which I abandoned because I had trouble getting nice flashing without using flashing slips.…

Does anyone make any slipcast ware which they then fire with soda or salt? I'm experimenting with it and wondered if there were any unforeseen issues that I might come across?

Thanks for the encouraging comments Keith. It's a small downdraft kiln, with a chamber 18"x18"x27". If I get results I like then I'm thinking I'll invest in a bigger version, but I don't want to throw good money after bad. The peephole you refer t…

I am sure it's a common thing to be somewhat dissappointed with a first firing in a new kiln. it can take a few firings to start getting the results you want. I know it did me. What kind of kiln (down or cross draft) and how big? Do you have a pee…

What kind of work do you do?
Thrown porcelain functional ware, electric firing, but now building wood fired soda kiln.

Hi Paul,

I guess it IS hard to tell from the pics (partly from the sloppy mortar job! I did eventually clean it up a little.)

You're right, it is 2 layers of bricks - 2.5" hard on the inside and 3" soft on the outside. I coated the inside w/ITC. I bought the hard bricks used and had to scrape and grind the former "gunk" off of them. (I don't think I saved enough money to justify the work!!)

The other real PAIN was their different size. It took some fudging to get the header courses to line up!!! I've heard people complain of the same problem with new bricks. There was actually fudging all over the place on this kiln build!! I had never built a kiln before and was only familiar with electric firing. Thank goodness I have a knowledgeable friend who did the designing and a lot of the building, but he only builds a kiln every few years, so there was still a bit of a learning curve to the process. But that's kinda true about pottery in general, isn't it? So many variables!! It keeps us on our toes!

I want to try a soda firing in the near future. That's really what I wanted to do in the first place, but took some classes on saltfiring and decided to try it. I would prefer a result that doesn't require a lot of decorating, where the kiln does the magic on the outside of the pot with flashing and soda deposits. Just not sure what method of soda introduction to use. More experiments will ensue!!

Good luck with your kiln building endeavors!! Keep us posted on your progress!
