I took my BFA and ran to "the barn". I haven't looked back. I did a three year residency at Penland which I thought of my "graduate school" except without the crits. I've always had plenty of ideas and drive, not to mention passion.
yea , we used to call it reptile 6 when it came out kinda dry.
One thing I like to do is after dipping the pot into the slip, wait a moment, until the wetness sets a little, then go in with a cheap hardware store brush and do a hakeme texture in ...
Unfortunately, pots are doing much at the moment because of knee healing, crutches, etc, but hoping to get back in the studio even for an hour or so a day very soon! Missing North Carolina Springtime, and you guys!
Michael, are you going to be at NCECA? If so, please stop by and introduce yourself, because I'm a huge fan of your work, and I'd love to pick your brain about salt+wood firing. Did a workshop with at the Bray with Josh last summer and we fired his little cat with salt and it was exquisite. We're building a bourry with a soda chamber this summer and I can't wait! Anyway, I'll be at the Master Kiln Builders booth (don't know if you know my husband, Donovan Palmquist?)...hope to see you there.

thanks for checking in. the storms are relentless and this old man is buffing up with the shovel workout - we could've moved south when we left detroit. but now im in front of the fireplace with the beautiful patricia and all is well. it would be great to see you in june if your schedule has a convenient opening.
right back at you for a great holiday season for you and yours. the new year in your new studio should be great.

Hi Michael,
I just posted a few pictures of my last soda firing. I had planned on this refiring them before posting pictures but since you asked, I uploaded a few. They're not quite where I want them yet. Right now, I think I'm more happy with my pieces in the greenware stage as I'm still working out some of the firing issues.
I've just unloaded a kiln and will have some time later to take some pictures. We tried the soda/whiting/sawdust thing, but our "batter" didn't set up. Micah Cain thinks its because the soda ash was old? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks for inviting me to be a part of the fun. It made me think I have to figure out the low fire soda thing fast.
Ive been thinking about the rims of your pots alot lately. Ill send along pics (when I get them shot) of some hand building that Ive been doing that is based on those rims.
I hope your doing well. .Thanks again
Ben
Michael, I've been up in Maine for a month and see that you left some comment that I don't know how to retrieve. I think it got filtered on my postini and I accidently deleted it. We will be at Rebels Creek on Friday am and may return to Hilton Head that afternoon, if Hanna lets us travel. steve
I was checking out some of your work today at AKAR 's page, there was one in particular that i especially liked it was a white slip tea pot with a little black bird on the lid. Just great stuff...
Yeah, I've been poking around a little bit over there and have picked up some tips. Last week Kent converted a weed burner to use the veggie oil and had success in getting a good flame, but I haven't seen the results yet.
