Hi there, I'm new to salt firing. Just built a kiln and have fired it once so far with acceptable results. Planing to fire it again in the next few weeks and looking forward to many more firings!! I don't have any formal training, but I learn what…

Thank you. I love the blushing you're getting with your oribe (?) over shino. I mixed my first batch of glazes too thin. Haven't mixed my own for YEARS!! And even then, always fired electric. A LOT more variables now!!

What kind of work do you do?
I'm in the process of building my first salt kiln. I'm hoping to "become" a potter when I grow up (I'm only 47, so there's still a little time!) I produce functional work and am exploring brushwork and slips that will work in the salt kiln. I have a friend who lets me woodfire with him when I feel like getting even grungier than usual!
Interests:
other than pottery?
gardening
playing with my new grand-son!!

Thanks for that Loretta.
I note you sprayed hard brick with ITC, I thought it was usually sprayed on to soft brick - how's it holding up? I'm reluctant to use any coating after the stories I hear of them flaking and peeling.

On the contrary (to your comments re mortaring) you kiln looks tidy to me :)

How many firings have you done?

I think the issue with mixing salt and soda is that once you've salted a coating of salt is laid down in the kiln which will affect the next few firings.

Best of luck with it all.

Hi there. I'm planning on building a similar kiln in early 2010. The wall is 2 bricks thick right? It was a bit hard to tell from the pictures. All hard brick or maybe a softer insulation brick on the outside?
I envy you the space.
Looks great! :)

Loretta, I am sorry that I have not posted to my blog recently. I have been sooo busy that I have not had time. Much has happened with my kiln project and I will post again, I am very interested in sharing what I have learned.

Hi Loretta, Congratulations on your first firing. Your pots look great. I especially like the brush work. I plan to build a salt kiln the same size and shape this fall so it was nice to see step by step progress. I think you guys were at my studio in South Haven.

Loretta,
Nice kiln! I notice you are also a member of June Perry's group on Yahoo. I am in the process of building my kiln, which is similar in design to yours. I am still building the foundation, kiln will begin soon.
