Josh Copus puggin' the local clay

Here's my studiomate, Josh Copus, after pugging what looks to be about 1200 pounds of local NC clay. This clay was excavated from a bank aside of a tobacco field. Josh has eleven dump truck loads of this stuff. He's set for a while.
A day's work. (similar pile behind him)

HOT out of the kiln

So, I unloaded the kiln today. It was overall a nice firing. I lost two pots due to "soda drips" landing on pots. These pots are headed to Charlotte in a few weeks. The Fourth Annual Mint Museum of Art Potters Invitational is September 6th. Visit www.mintmuseum.org/pottersmarket for more information on that.

I'll need to kick it in high gear next week and make a kiln load of pots. I'd like to fire again in two weeks. One week to make, one week to decorate. I do have a head start with some pots already made. So, here's some images of the unloading. Back to the studio tomorrow!

still hot in there!

What kind of work do you do?
Wheel-thrown decorative and functional salt/soda-fired pottery. Lately...less functional and more decorative. Once-fire to cone 10. Propane fueled crossdraft catenary. 40 cubic feet stacking space. 24 hour firing including overnight candle. 4 lbs table salt, 1 lb baking soda, distributed in 1/2 lb burritos, 2 at a time from cone 7 to cone 10. Slow cool for 2 days.
Interests:
Family, art, vacation, camping, college basketball, good beer, gardening, gangster movies.

Too bad that I wasn't there... I'm in my studio most days! Next time you come to Chicago, please let me know and we'll definitely meet up. Did you get to wander around Lillstreet at all?
