In this case it's Strontium Crystal Magic (a recipe from Steven Hill) & Mark Nafziger’s Gold. Usually the strontium crystal magic is sprayed on first and then other glazes layered over. In this case, it was dipped in a shino first and then sprayed...
I am sure it's a common thing to be somewhat dissappointed with a first firing in a new kiln. it can take a few firings to start getting the results you want. I know it did me.
What kind of kiln (down or cross draft) and how big?
Do you have a p...
I have a BFA in Printmaking. Did some assistant work for a ceramic artist in montana, but the rest was book/internet/hands on experience, and a lot of great advice from other potters. I consider myself self taught, however that concept is sort of ...
Hey Keith, glad to hear from you and I hope all is well in your neck of the woods as well. I herniated a disc in my lower back about three months ago and that has been a major set back for me. I am healing and going to do a firing this weekend. Things are looking good as I have a lot of my pots already sold that are going in the next firing. I am getting my pieces in the local coffee shops around town and building up some good pieces for shows, pics for my website etc.. Will check back soon to see some of your new pieces. Take care,
keith, Zach here in Texas. I finally fired and would like to send you a mug for all your help. Posting photos Sunday. If you give me your address I'll send one out to you asap. Thanks again for your help and input. Hope all us well.

Hey Keith,

Take care......Bruce
hey. just checked out your blog. looks great. fantastic looking firing, pots look great. thanks for the inspiration to get me going in the 2009 year. peace
Howdy. Just wanted to thank you for your valuable input. I sure do appreciate it! I was out of town for a bit this January for my yearly pilgrimage to the mountains to snowboard. I know, a Texan who snowboards. I went to school in Wyoming though and have spent tons of time in mountains all over. Anway, I posted a blog but thought you would like to know that the plumbers finally came over yesterday and hooked me up to my propane. I have renewed energy now as I was getting quite depressed with the lack of progress. Had to force them into doing it though which was a bummer. Oh well, some times that is what it takes. Going to do my test firing in the next week. Putting in various old bisque ware I do not care about to test glazes etc.. Will let you know how it goes. Hope business is well for you. Take care
Hey Keith. Still waiting to hear from the propane guys to come hook my lungs for the kiln....been checking your blog, and your brothers crazy animation, and I had a question for you about web design. What has shaped your decision to sell your work on Etsy? I guess I want to ask without sounding rude, how come you do not have your own website for your pottery? What is your approach to promoting/selling your work? I am in the midst of struggling with setting up my own website with Amazon, or Yahoo or who knows which is best....and feel like I am drowning. I plan on attending shows, promoting to galleries, getting published and having studio shows. On top of this I want a website that a customer can go to, find a pot, click on it and buy it. Just hoping to get some feedback and yes, more help. You seem to have your act together and just wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks for your time and I hope you and yours had some good times over Christmas and the New Year. Zach
Hey Keith!
One of the mudders mentioned this site this morning and once again... I'm in heaven. I'm working on pulling together the resources for a small fast fire kiln for demos for our local community collage. This looks like a fantastic site to pull together a few loose ends.

Hi Keith;
thanks for posting your blog.
I have so much to learn!!! I never had the opportunity to soda fire in art school so my husband and I are trying to figure out things as we go. Your trials will certainly help us!
Yeah, we're thinking hard brick. What would you change about your kiln if you could?
Hi Keith;
we were looking at Jack Doherty's kiln design, but had read that the arch design can cause some problems, so we are going to customize it to have straight sides with an arched top. It seems to be one of those projects where, when we have the money, we don't have the time, or when we have the time, we don't have the money. I'm dying to get into soda firing! For my own creative sanity!!!
