firing went smooth, no burners going out. i fired several chawan on the side w/ shells. will see what happens. either it will be stunning or rubbish. relativity !

just fired
also stuffed the kiln w/ mesquite . opening on friday after cooling and will post photographs of the kama (kiln).

- I am working at the WVU/JCI International Ceramic Studio as the studio tech. We do not have any students here right now, so I am mainly making my own work. I just fired a soda kiln and will get some images on my page soon. I enjoyed some of your teapots also, especially the rocking one. You know Peter Voulkos earlier works. I am working with a local porcelain and a dark, iron rich clay at about a 60-40 mix of the two.

Mitch Kimball said… - Hey Cory, I have been using Loafers Glory, a North Carolina clay, for a while now. I have noticed it will become "washed out" in a soda firing so I tried three other clay bodies as well in the last firing. Two were local Kentucky clays and one had disastrous effects, while the other produced nice orange peel effects and good flashing. The third clay body flashed nicely as well- it is called Aurora. I am going to research other local clays in the next firing.
