Cher - I use the three openings along the bottom front of the firebox for my kidling fires and for stoking during the first several hours. I then start to stoke through the two secondary air ports just above these hearth air openings with slightly longer pieces (up to about 24") until the pyrometers in the ware chambers read 1000 degrees Fahrenheit at which point I start side stoking through the stoking ports on the side of the firebox which are located above the five fire grate bars which are visible in the photo. It usually takes about 12 hours to get to this point and then another 24 to complete the firing. I have also double-fired some pieces that appear to need a little more "time in the oven". My next firing will also be in the April/May time frame. We should compare notes! Take care...
Cher, Welcome to the site. I checked out your website and enjoyed reading about your kiln. I use the "Japanese Wood-Fired Ceramics" book as a valuable reference for each firing of my Bourry-box kiln. In fact, your kiln reminds me very much of my kiln in general layout. Your work appears to be from a kiln with a much longer firing duration than mine (and exhibits wonderful ash effects). My kiln generally fires in the 38-40 hour time range. How long do your firings last?
